What it contains
The Basel Framework brings together all the standards of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), the primary global standard setter for the prudential regulation of banks. The Committee’s members agreed to fully implement these standards and apply them to internationally active banks in their jurisdictions. The BIS page includes a description of the framework’s structure and how to navigate it, a search tool and the ability to view the framework as it was or will be on a specific date.
It is organized into chapters by topic: scope and definitions (SCO), definition of capital (CAP), risk-based capital requirements (RBC), among others, with numbered sub-chapters that allow precise citation (for example, SRP31 for interest rate risk in the banking book). The full version can be downloaded as a 1,429-page PDF.
It is a document that changes: as of 7 October 2026 the page recorded changes in force on 1 January 2026 in SCO60, DIS10, DIS55, SRP31 and SRP98, and changes planned for 1 January 2027 in DIS10, OPE25, SCO40, RBC30 and DIS51. It is therefore advisable to cite it by chapter and consultation date.
Why it matters for risk management
It is the starting point for any analysis of capital, liquidity, market and credit risk and disclosure under international standards. Given its length, cite the chapter and verify the version in force on the date of consultation.
