Fourth Annual Risk Conference 2026
What it is about
Hernán Enríquez, partner at Management Solutions, presented at the Fourth Annual Risk Conference (September 18, 2026) why a financial conglomerate has risks that belong to none of its entities and how to manage them.
The 28 slides start from a twenty-year view and three cases of intragroup contagion, and set out the central principle: in a conglomerate risk is not added up, it is transmitted. They review the perimeter (accounting, regulatory and management), international regulation and the taxonomy of conglomerate risks, with strategic, contagion and concentration risk, and follow a numerical example of how an exposure in a subsidiary reaches the cost of the group. They describe governance, the risk appetite of the group and of each entity, six difficulties, four trends, a four-stage roadmap and eight challenges.
Objectives
- Explain why the risk of a conglomerate is more than the sum of the risk of its entities.
- Define the perimeter and the taxonomy of risks that distinguish a conglomerate.
- Propose a group framework for governance, appetite and data, with a roadmap.
Key takeaways
- Group risk is the sum of the risk of each entity plus the risk originating in the relationship between them; this second part is not declared by any entity nor fully observed by any sector supervisor.
- The transmission channels are funding, guarantees, capital, liquidity, operations and brand and customer.
- In the example, a loss of USD 55 million in a consumer finance company with equity of USD 40 million exceeds the subsidiary but not the group; even so, the single brand means the group and finally the bank absorb the cost.
- Materiality depends on connection, not only on size; containing contagion requires layers built before the incident: intragroup limits, operational independence, separability, liquidity and recovery.
- Appetite is translated, not copied: the group sets the common taxonomy and scale, and each entity defines its metric, threshold and limits, approved by the group board and adopted by the board of each entity.
