Fourth Annual Risk Conference 2026

What it is about

Omar Briceño, from Advanced Risk Services (ADRISK), presented at the Fourth Annual Risk Conference (September 17, 2026) what quantum computing is and which opportunities and challenges it opens for the financial system.

The 22 slides explain the difference between the classical bit and the qubit and the three characteristics of the quantum bit (superposition, interference and entanglement), stress that quantum computing is not here to replace classical computing and walk through the opportunities in the financial system with examples from JP Morgan, CaixaBank and BBVA. They then set out the challenges, including Shor algorithm and its effect on data security, and close with the need to distinguish where real value is generated.

Objectives

  • Explain with simple examples how quantum computing differs from classical computing.
  • Present the opportunities of quantum computing in the financial system according to the literature and industry cases.
  • Point out the challenges and obstacles before its use becomes widespread.

Key takeaways

  1. We are not facing simply faster computers but another way of solving certain problems, and quantum computing has not come to replace classical computing.
  2. The qubit can be 0 and 1 at the same time; its three characteristics are superposition, interference and entanglement.
  3. An experimental exercise cited from a BIS paper (BIS Paper 149) shows incremental improvements of quantum models over classical ones, which do not yet constitute evidence of a generalizable quantum advantage.
  4. Industry cases include option pricing (JP Morgan and IBM), portfolios of mortgages and Treasury bonds and Monte Carlo simulations (CaixaBank and IBM), and portfolio optimization and algorithmic trading (BBVA).
  5. Shor algorithm, which factors prime numbers exponentially faster, is the main challenge for data security; the challenge is to distinguish where real value is generated and to prepare institutions.
